Meet quarter end with a Blog?

How many sales managers or marketing managers recall the phone call two weeks before quarter end and the company is 10% short on the revenue budget and the bosses are looking for sales, and from anywhere. All of a sudden you start the aggressive conference calls finding out which region has a full pipeline to tap, what rep has prospects that can take product early, what program can be launched in two weeks, and even yes – team you better hit your objective this quarter or you may not be here for the next one.

If you heard, Johnny from the Allentown market comment he had five registered users on his blog that posted last week they were interested in participating in a pilot program for a 10% discount and a 12 month term, and they said they could sign ASAP. You would kiss Johnny on the forehead then say; what the heck is a blog?

Benefits of blogs or microsites or forums or whatever you want to call them today?

Yes, this technology moves fast and so do the names. A community site using digit marketing can be a match made in heaven for exchanging goods. Providing the proper discussion topics, intellectual feedback and two way conversation to a very targeted market that has similar interests; could there be a better marketplace? In addition, traditional marketing typically told you what to do, however community sites educate you on how to make the best decisions, so listen and learn, then produce the best product for the best price to meet the customer at the right time at the right place to consider your product. By the way, if you educate the customer on something that may not lead to an immediate sale, trust is built, and trust wins deals!

Is traditional marketing that different from digital marketing?

Yes, but just like personal selling was different from newspaper advertising or then direct mail or then telesales and on and on. Digital marketing is very different from traditional marketing, however similar principles apply and if you do not sharpen your skills and add digital marketing to your tool kit, you will be left behind. helped us.

These leads stink!

That’s the goal, to eliminate non-qualified, non-interested, and non-potential customers from the sales guys list. That’s right, no more mass direct mail, outbound dialing for dollars or blind email. Digital marketing provides the means to create deeper engagement and interaction with a company to form deeper relationships. Sounds similar to the courtship process? It is!

People communicate very differently today, so since the marketing and sales process is a mirror into how people interact and communicate, it’s time to get on the same page. Either a website, or social site, or email distribution, or webinar, or download, or blog, or search engine, you get the point!

The new sales cycle. more challenging, takes longer but lasts longer, involves more steps, takes more contacts, and the more education you provide to a prospect – they may appreciate that, and buy something from you!

Reflections Week 3 – Steve Overslaugh

Reflections Week 3 – Steve Overslaugh

In week three the main topic discussed related to using Google Analytics to understand more about the effectiveness of digital campaigns. The main takeaway continues to be the consistent message around ensuring a company or marketing manager and the executive team have a sound, connected and consistent strategy. This strategy must be well communicated internally and externally. Then when using a digital strategy or tactics one should continue to view changes in behavior, response, or effectiveness to take advantage of the ability to make real time changes to a program.

Where did all my friends go?

I went to my favorite bar to meet my snowmobiling friends and the bar was empty? Not only are my friends not there, but they are all going to a new hangout that provides them with 50,000 new friends that enjoy snowmobiling just like me.

This new bar also allows me to bypass any cheap talk I don’t feel like listening to. It allows me to bypass meaningless conversation on topics that used to bore me at the old bar. That’s right, the online community of snowmobilers called allows me to connect with snowmobile enthusiasts just like me; when I feel like talking to them. Oh yeah, these new friends also think what I have to say is pretty important too!

Not sure about your next purchase, just ask 50,000 people just like you! provides me with validation of my decisions related to snowmobiling! There is always someone available that purchased, used, or knows someone that tried what I am interested in learning.

This new bar is much bigger than our last hangout and I can always find someone that can provide me with valuable and credible advice. Sometimes 10 riders or more have experience in something I would like to understand, do, or purchase related to the sport of snowmobiling.

Where is the snow? I want to ride my $20,000 snowmobile this year.

One of the benefits of my new community of friends is the fact that I do not have to go anywhere to converse with my new bar friends. They can come into my living room when I want and leave when I log off.

Snowmobiling is an expensive sport with a very short riding season. The best part about my new community of bar friends is the real time trail conditions and snowfall totals that are discussed!

Reflections Week 2 – Steve Overslaugh

Steve Overslaugh Reflections Week 2

In week 2 of MKT 570 Digital Marketing the concepts discussed included Google AdWords, organic search engine marketing, deconstructing various websites and also discussed the difference between blogs and formal copy writing.

The big takeaway for me in week two was the continued concept that blog writing should be informal, conversational, add personality and does not always have to be direct selling, just engaging. So I tried that this week in my blog on parenting.

This even means the potential of giving readers information about the industry that may or may not lead to your immediate sale, however builds trust and confidence among readers that you are providing information that is useful; even if it means this honest information does not place your company or product at the top spot, but educates and engages in a community of conversation.

I will still need to get used to that concept – possibly not placing my company 1st that is.

I am a good parent, right?

I am a good parent, right?

As a Generation X child from Baby Boomer parents there may be many things to learn as a new parent about the world we live in today versus how we were handled as children 30 – 40 years ago. Our parents sure had a different approach than we do today.

Can you identify which of the below were from the Generation X child and which one was created from a more sensitive recent toddler of today?

What should you do if you child said…..

  • Why is your skin so tan or pale to another friend?
  • Why do you have 2 Dads or Moms to a fellow preschooler
  • Sh#* or F%@k that was overheard from an inappropriate adult conversation

These are all spontaneous opportunities and teaching moments, will you be ready with the appropriate parental comments? Visiting will help you prepare to handle these types of life moments to ensure these opportunities turn into teaching moments and not one less little person to have a playdate with in the future.

I’m a guy, how would I know that?

This sounds sexists, right? That is not the intent. Men would like to know if they are taking the proper steps with raising their children just as much as women, and especially the ones that have not done it before; which is every father at some point in their life.

Not sure who to ask and all your friends appear to have everything under control because men talk about fantasy football and cars, not if we selected the best pre-school or daycare provider to enrich our child’s learning. can be a resource to see what other parents have done in similar situations and to learn how others have made decisions. There is not a right nor wrong to parenting, just continued learning through parental blogs.
